=====================================
A few weeks after returning to Sierra Leone, someone casually mentioned that a new hotel was being built in Makeni. I made a mental note that I should check it out when I could fit it in. This person neglected to mention that this isn't just a hotel, Makeni was about to benefit from probably the best hotel in Sierra Leone!
Wusum Hotel, located along Teko Road has 51 rooms and 5 chalets (each with 2 rooms). The chalets are fully equipped with a kitchen, dinning area, the living rooms with 50inch plasma TV set and modern Italian furniture. Each chalet is equipped with a 19inch wireless broadband laptop.
The also has a conference centre, wine bar/bar/night club (APEX), 3 swimming pools, business centre (with good Internet speeds) and are planning to do car rentals from within the compound. It will also house Eco-Bank in Makeni. Every room is air-conditioned, comes with a double bed, fridge and safe. It's a beautiful hotel. It isn't officially open until later in the year, but some areas are open for business.
As even more people told me about it and I came to learn that this was the work of Vincent Kanu, former Managing Director of NP. Another Sierra Leonean contributing positively to the tourism industry.
I eventually paid a visit to the hotel a few weeks ago and it lived up to all the hype. The hotel is fantastic, but more than that I was comforted that maybe Sierra Leonean entrepreneurship is not dead. This hotel could comfortably sit in Freetown, that would have been the safe choice but being born and schooled (St. Francis Secondary school) in Makeni, Vincent Kanu thought he'd give back. Make no mistake, he's a businessman who prior to the Wusum Hotel project spent all his career in the oil industry (over 40 years). He also worked for Agip Spa, Italy, BP, before retiring in 2005 as Managing Director of Sierra Leone National Petroleum Company. He is a private sector man through and through. When asked what his inspiration was he replied:
"Several factors - foremost being the moral obligation to pay back. I was one of the few and lucky students who benefited from three scholarships from the district and it is only fair that 'I GIVE BACK TO CAESAR WHAT IS CAESARS'
During construction and for two years 94 people were employed and currently we have a hotel staff strength of 32. The second one is Nationalism. Nobody will develop our country if we don't do it ourselves. Donor countries, will encourage us to wake up, but it is left with us to decide our own future. By such ventures we are enhancing the capacity of the tourist industry, without which real economic growth will not be achieved."
Amen.
When asked why Makeni, he went on:
"Makeni is a hub with a massive tourist potential which had to be unlocked. With no modern hospitality facilities, this potential is unachievable."
Damn, I like this guy! He's on to something here. The North has enormous potential for Eco-Tourism which as yet is largely unexplored. If the Lungi-Rogberi road is constructed (oh no! he's on about the road again!), this would mean that you could go straight to Makeni and comfortably spend the night before heading off on Eco-Tourism adventures. Makeni's a hub alright. It's easily accessible from attractions like Bumbuna Falls, Wara-Wara Mountains, Loma Mountains, Lake Sonfon and Outamba Kilimi National Park. In theory, you could have an eco-tourist holiday without even coming to Freetown. If you do decide to come to Freetown from Makeni, the road is perfect all the way and should take you just over a couple of hours.
Besides tourists (who are still in short supply here), I can see this hotel being very popular with NGOs and travelling business people who cry out for some good quality accommodation in the provinces. It doesn't get much better than this. The hotel has already started taking bookings for the conference centre - and it isn't even complete yet.
Personally, I'd love to be able to just drive out of Freetown and spend a comfortable weekend in some other part of the country. This is now possible with Makeni, I also hear the night club (which started out as a bar) is rocking. "There's nothing to do here" is a complaint I often hear from some folks. Well, jump in a car and go spend a couple of nights in Makeni. Makeni town itself is not exactly rocking like the centre of Bo, but I tip it to be a transformed town in the next few years. Now all the district needs are other individuals to exhibit the same sort of vision and belief displayed by Vincent Kanu - and invest in other activities in the region.
Good luck to Mr. Kanu, as they say - Fortune favours the brave!

Amen, brother! Amen!!!
Good Job, I hope he makes some profit from his investment - This is huge
We need many more Sierra Leoneans like him
Well done Mr Kanu, I am proud of you.
You are one of the few that can get wealth from the land and actually invest back to it, others will take away to banks abroad with no benefit to the our dear nation.
Hope this will send a massage to others. BRAVO son of the north.

All I can say is this is AWESOME!!! At least we the 'Freetown" folks have a place to get away with the 'missus' when next we are home. I am impresed!
One doesn't need to be a politician to make his/her contribution in the land. The millions of leones/dollars Mr Kanu would have spent to become one of the politicians, which at the end he would have ended bleeding the poor state to regain that, has instead been spent in such a handsome project. This will not only promote the town of Makeni but also has created job oppotunities for the jobless out there in Makeni and beyond.
BRAVO PA KANU

Well done, Well done, i pray your investment heel lot of returns.
You are one in a million, i hope you continue to think about more other business for salone.
Well done Mr Kanu.
Mr A (UK)
very impressive Mr Kanu, good luck and I look forwarward to visiting your hotel some time.
More Fire Sir, More fire.
Well done. In a related project, the town of Makali (under the direction of Abdul Kanu) is working on "Makali Village." This will be an old style working village where guests are an active part of the community. This project is just in the planning stages, but will go well with the eco-tourism in progress. Take a look at http://cipsierraleone.blogspot.com/2007/11/concept-makali-village.html
This is a masterpiece work done by a proud Sierra Leonean...Keep it up Papa Kanu more grease to your elbow!

It is unbelievale but I trust Sierra Leoneans when they want to do something they go for it thank God that we are realizing it that nobody will help build Salone if Sierra Leoneans themslves fail to do it. There is no place like home. With all what we have here in the USA I can tell you that I miss Salone.A big thank U to all those that are catching the dream of our Dear President EBK.
GOOD JOB, MY BROTHER, GOOD JOB. I LEFT FREETOWN, IN 1992, AND I CAN'T WAIT TO VISIT FREEETOWN, AND MAKENI, TO SEE ALL THESE IMPROVEMENTS.
The big question is cost. What will be daily room rates be for this property?
For those working with the UN (UNDP, UNICEF, etc), the DSA for outside Freetown is US$60 -- and that includes both meals and room.
Is the pricepoint for this new facility affordable for UNDP personnel who would require such a hotel?
Well done. You are a true Sierra Leonean. Others like us will follow your example. God bless you.

What an inspiration to read this article. I lived and worked for one year in Sierra Leone and am planning a return trip for a holiday to see "mi padi dem". Now I have every reason and intention to visit Makeni and shall look forward to staying in this wonderful hotel. Sierra Leone's vision for 2025 will come to fruition!!!! Good start.
I would like to salute Mr. Vincent Kanu for his inpiration to all Sierra Leoneans to give back to Society some of our blessings. Too often we are busy thinking about what to derive from society. Mr. Kanu is inspiring us to do thereverse, to think what to give back to society.
Mr. Kanu, your positive initiative will help lift Makeni and Sierra Leone.
May God continue to bless you and your WUSUM initiative.

AM VERY MUCH AMAZED WHEN I OPENED MY MAIL BOX AND SEE THIS WONDERFUL WORK DONE BY A REAL PATRIOT OF THIS NATION. HE IS THE FIRST GENTLE MAN OF THIS REPUBLIC TO INVEST ALL HE HAS LABOURED FOR TO PUT THIS NATION TO THE TOURISTIC MAP.I WILL ALWAYS PRAY THAT GOD GIVE THIS MAN GOOD HEALTH AND ALL THE SATANS TO MOVE AWAY FROM HIM AND HIS FAMILY SO THAT HE AND HIS FAMILY COULD ENJOYED WHAT THEY HAVE LABOURED FOR.
THE NAME MR. KANU WILL EVER REMAIN IN THE TOURISTIC HISTORY OF THIS COUNTRY.I WISH HIM AND FAMILY A GOOD SUCCESSOR AND ALL THAT THEY WISH FOR THEM SELVES.

Wooooowwwww. Thank you! I'm an American who spends a great deal of time in Kono caring for my school I started two years ago. It will be a cool drink of water to be able to stay overnight in Makeni if necessary and will allow me to leave Kono later in the day with the comfort of knowing I can stay someplace safe and comfortable just 3 hours into my 6 hour journey to Freetown.
Even more, it's beautiful that native made this a reality.

Waw! This is great! I'm very much impressed by such a nice piece of work.It really seems to be the best hotel in Sierra Leone because of all the latest modern conveniences. I really do hope that the staff will be well trained because it will be a shame if all this planning, hard work and hope for good benefits and results all go down to the drain. Bravo! for a job well done.
Our elder brother, Kothor Vincent Kanu has always set us some of the highest standards over the past few decades for us to emulate. Evidently, the Wusum Hotel in Makeni is at the citadel of all benchmarks, one that should encourage all of us to meaningfully contribute, no matter how small, to long term nation building in Sierra Leone. We salute you Kothor Vincent. Benedict Kanu in Kampala, Uganda.

That is very good and patriotic of MR Vincent Kanu.Considering such a nice Hotel been built at Makeni his home town.
Before the construction of this plush hotel in Makeni, the national pastoral centre resort in Kenema was to me the best place to go for a break from work. The buildings are not really magnificent but the garden is a true "island of sanity in a provinve of social insanity". But now i should perhaps have a rethink. Wusum hotel is indeed beathtaking to say the least. Fortunately for the proprietor, the establishment of such a magnificent edifice has coincided with the coming to office of the APC government has has its base in the north. He is therefore assured of business at least, from the top polical class in that region. Bravo to the proprietor for such an enterprising venture. However, I still clinging to my judgement of the pastoral centre resort in Kenema because it is naturally serene and blissful.

Wow!It really took my breathe away, and to top it all it was built by one of our own. This hotel to tell the truth would have been in Freetown but Mr Kanu seem it fit to build it in Makeni setting the pase for others to follow.Indeed it is the Jewel of Africa, and it one place i'll like to work beign a student from the milton margai college of education Brook field campus were i did hoet management.
Sierra Leone is really bless with the like s of you and i pray and hope that they will emmulate you.I for one will surely do in the future.May God bless you and continue to give you more wisdom in all you do.lovelydalk@yahoo.com Amen.
Thanks Vincent,
Sierra Leone is the most beautiful West African country in my eyes. We need people like you with good vision to rule the country. We just need 10 of your calibre, as those in power still do not realize that these are the things they should be doing to attract tourists. Sadlly enough, most of these politicians have lived overseas for a good part of their lives, and they ought to start building back the country as it was during the 60's 70, and 80's.
For those of us abroad, we have to defend ourselves everyday, that Africa is not what they see on television. People still believe that Africans are very poor, and i am glad that Vincent has shown all of us that we can make Sierra Leone a better place to stay.
It's good to rise above the usual mediocrity of Salone mentality. It's only unfortunate that a few miles down the road is another structure but a delapidated one. It's the Government Hospital in Makeni. For a populace with a per capita income of about $200.00 per annum and last on the HDI (Human Dev. Index) one will stand in awe if a study in contrast is to be done. This is brilliant in place, if not in time. Check the most recent West African School Certificate Exam. results. Salone last. Why? Not because we do not have Grand Hotels, but poor salaries for teachers.I only hope the guests at this hotel will create a fund to build and stock a superb library for the children of Makeni who might be thinking of reaching the heights Mr. Kanu has achieved, since Education is the Key. I plan to spend a weekend there soon.
Congratulations, Mr. Kanu.
Absolutely commendable! What an achievement! I'm sending this to other Sierra Leoneans and friends of Sierra Leone who like myself are unaware of this venture. I'd definitely love to visit.
That's what am talking about. We have to do what we can to beautify our cities and not wait for foreigners to do it for us.
Bravo Mr Kanu. May God Continue to Bless you.

Brother Vincent Kanu has always been akin to the development of Makeni. I remember when we were fighting to build the Makeni Town Hall to give life to the people of Makeni. To regain the St. Francis sch. from the grips of govt. to go back to the Missionaries after its almost demise in the hands of unpatriotic old boys. I want to thank you for a splendid job well done. God bless you .
Wow! Going through this email and pictures run chills through my body. Thanks Mr. Kanu may the Lord richly bless your endeavor, you are a true example. I look forward to visiting your hotel when I visit from the USA.
I am encouraged to continue my masters program in nursing to be able to continue the good work started by you and the many others that believe in our country. Again thank you, you are a true man.
Do we have to rely on government for the entire development of our country? or the international community or make a safe haven for bald minded indigenes who have the country at heart. We must watch him and commend him as a lover of the nation.
Very nice and informative post about hotel.
When I was growing up as a teenager with a late friend "Ideas" (Lawrence Alusine Kanu)from Makari, we spent some holidays at Mr. Vincent Kanu's then place at Samuel's Lane-Kissy. That period in my life made me start to see and espouse the values of prudent management and a vission for achievement and patriotism - which Mr. Kanu has just lived up to this day. "Kothor" Kanu's achievement, is worth emulating. Bravo and may The Almighty guide you in your efforts. Joseph O. Mansaray, Calaba Town, F/Town. 076 606 429

What a remarkable person.Thank you for every thing.
coincidecdentially my name is Wusum as the name of the hotel from Rogbane Makeni town an alumni of St. Francis. Ofcourse as an alumniof St.Francis a patriot an indigeneous son of Makeni and of the land he only did kept the baner high as one of the chorus of his scchool song professed, i quote 'KEEP THE BANNER HIGH'end of quote.
I'm very proud of the hotel. Good job Daddy!

Hi Mr. Kanu
Even though I have not yet visited this most talked about WUSUM HOTEL, I have alraedy visualised in my minds eye its status. A colleague who has left comment wished Mr. kanu will make profit as it is an expensive project. My assurance to this well thought of gentleman is that this is a long term investment. Profit comes with time under good management and ongoing staff training which I am very confident Mr. Kanu would have given serious thought about. This hotel should be the first the first ****** hotel. I will surely be there each time I visit Sierra Leone. Thank you and Congratulations for making us proud of our town and wish you every future success.

Wah..great achievement and thanks to Sierra Leoneans. Everything is avaliable in this hotel with quality so i think anybody can choose this hotel without any doubt.
I never knew such a fantastic place as WUSUM HOTEL existed in Makeni - absolutely beautiful!
With the world noticing that SELF-SUFICIENCY IS THE NEW RICHES, we need to look inside at the natural goodness we have in SALONE, to focus on improving what we don't have.
Yes, WE CAN HAVE GOOD ROADS LINED WITH ASSORTED FRUIT TREES SO POVERTY IS HISTORY. Yes, WE CAN INVEST IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF BAMBOO - a priceless commodity - used for food, clothing, furniture and construction - some varieties are even hard as cement.
Yes, it is good for SOIL EROSION, REGENERATION AND REFORESTATION -EXCELLENT FOR CURBING DESERTIFICATION IN AFRICA and needs very little care.
PLEASE PASS ON THIS KNOWLEDGE as well as THE SOLAR INTELLIGENCE, SO OUR BLAZING SUN CAN NOT ONLY LIGHT UP OUR STREETS FOR OUR SAFETY BY DAY BUT ALSO BY NIGHT, FROM FREETOWN TO THIS FANTASTIC RESORT AND ON TO KAMAKUI...
...but go even further AND LIGHT UP VILLAGES, provide SOLAR CARS,LORRIES,FRIDGES, STOVES etc SO WE ARE NO LONGER VICTIMS OF PETRO-CHEMICALS... FLEEING OUR BELOVED LAND LIKE HEADLESS CHICKENS AND,instead, MAKE A 'U TURN' AND COME BACK HOME TO ROOST!
Go to YOUTUBE, SEE VISUAL INNOVATIONS... as the song goes, 'Africa awaits its creators both at home and abroad...'

Wusum Hotel and its Apex Club is breathtaking to say the least. Its establishment could not have come at a better time; a time when political power and by extention money and influence has shifted to the northern region of the country with Makeni as its provincial city. Indeed, the people of Makeni have for long lacked such a facility and should now breath a sigh of relief such an investment. Brovo Vincdent Kanu.

Absolutely magnificent blog. You really make to the point that every detail of the hotel was well describe.
Congrats! The place was so beautiful and elegant. God bless.
This is an amazing project that shows true patroitism to the mother land in general and to Makeni in particular.Very proud of you Mr.Kanu.Proud to be an old boy of St Francis, wusum house, that gave me the best Educational foundation which has enabled me to become a Medical Doctor. Very grateful!!
With such a state of the art hotel in the town will need a state of the art medical care - at least a modern Health centre. So would be nice if all Health Professionals both in Sierra Leone and in the Diaspora, who have Makeni at heart could come up with such a venture. If interested, please e-mail me on dhbangs@doctors.org.uk or dhbangs@live.co.uk.

CONGRATULATION MR KANU. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT I HAVE SEEN SO FAR FROM A PATRIOTIC CITIZEN OF SIERRA LEONE(NOT A POLITICIAN) WHO HAS GENUINE INTEREST IN DEVELOPING HIS COUNTRY. YOU DID NOT BUILD THE HOTEL IN FREE TOWN TO IMPRESS PEOPLE BUT IN THE PROVINECE TO PROVIDE VERY REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION TO VISITORS AND PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR YOUR PEOPLE.
CONGRATULATION.
I am so impress about this developement made by one non politician person. I feel motivated to do similar project in the future when i have the upper hand to do so. Thanks Mr Kanu for not been the others. You made me feel so proud to be a Sierra Leonean.

Peace upon you brothers, SIERRA LEONE should start rolling and pushing the wheel of economy. Start industrialization by putting power plants then put up small cottage industries, build crafts, boats, cars, trucks, houses, building and many tourist center. It can be a good business hub West Africa. Stop crime, stop white or racial discrimination, clean the street, start modern town center where business will thrive and employment for people becomes easy. Put more schools and training centers for agriculture, engineering, maritime, aquaculture and jewelry industries. Then let Sierra Leone become modern manufucturing place in West Africa. We can design it for 20 years development plan. Engr. E. de leon from Philippines.
Sierra Leone can start its economy rolling by constructing more power plants, put up more cottage industries, create town centers, put up manufacturing industries, create business center like Makati City in Philippines, stop crimes, stop racial discrimination, attract tourist not attack tourist, develop more tourist area, give free education to its people, develop more skilled manpower put up more schools and training center and start the long term development plan for SIERRA LEONE. We can help in terms of civil and infrastructure planning for Sierra Leonne. We have many urban planners and civil engineer from the Philippines.
Wow! This is great! I'm very much impressed by such a nice piece of work. What an inspiration to read this article.

hi Mr. Kanu i am visiting makeni next week. can you breaf me your detailed address to visit your peredice. my email is jigar@jigarenterprise.com
I am very much surprised to see such a lovely hotel in Makeni.
After so many years there is still a soft spot in me for Makeni.
We, as young Dutch boys, building St. Francis Sec. School, spend almost 2 years in that fine town.
Learned to know many of the schoolboys, in particular Vincent Kanu.
He has done so well.
I noticed, the hotel is on Teko Road, isn’t that were the Mission used to be?
For what’s left of it after the tumultuous recent years.
From Holland, congratulations.
